Energy Management and Recharging for Efficient Electric Car Driving
The EMERALD project addresses energy use optimization and the seamless integration of the FEV into the transport and energy infrastructure, by delivering clear advances over the state-of-the-art. The goal is to assist the FEV in becoming a successful commercial product.
To achieve this, the EMERALD project will innovate a range of advanced functionalities and solutions targeted for efficient vehicle energy management as well as for effective integration with the grid, with cooperative transport infrastructures and with fleet management and planning systems.
These novel functionalities are:

- Energy-efficient long-range route planning and optimization

Cooperative Advanced Driver Assistance System for Green Cars
EcoGem's key-objective is to integrate intelligence and learning functionalities to on-board systems for FEVs, enabling autonomous as well as interactive learning through V2X interfacing. EcoGem vehicles will learn over time to predict (and thus avoid) congested routes, based on experience that they gather. This learning process will eventually render each EcoGem FEV capable of autonomously classifying routes according to their degree of congestion, enabling energy-driven route planning optimization.
Improvements on the energy efficiency of FEVs will also be achieved through the consideration of road characteristics in the route planning process. This means that routes with steep road slopes, although shorter, might be less energy efficient for an electric vehicle, and should this be avoided. EcoGem will help the driver in optimally taking such complex energy-driven decisions.
CONFES project aims to evolve the architecture of existing wireless-optical broadband transmission networks, to serve both next generation mobile networks and fixed metropolitan networks.
Specifically, the objectives of the Project are the following:
- Overall architecture definition of a hybrid wired/wireless network infrastructure, with guaranteed quality and high end-to-end efficiency.
- Implementation of appropriate traffic management entities in both the base station (BS-ODORA) and the optical element domain (ONU/OLT-ODORA), as well as the allocation protocol (ODORAP) of the backhaul resource requirements from base stations to the optical network.
- Integration of the CONFES solution in commercially available management platforms of new generation systems (LTE).
- Trial and operation demonstration, analysis of results and technical evaluation of the CONFES solution.
- Conduction of techno-economic studies to investigate the commercial feasibility of the solution, based on CONFES use-case scenarios incorporated to existing/future networks, telecommunication traffic models, charging parameters, SLAs between involved parties (network/service operators, users), etc.
- Architecture expansion consideration for integrating WDM technologies, to meet future capacity requirements while minimizing the cost of infrastructure upgrades.
Intelligent Car Management Application for Advanced Green Road Transport Services
CARMA is a national Greek project aiming at building an innovative and comprehensive ICT system targeted for supporting and promoting Green daily commuting habits, with a particular focus on helping the user save on fuel expenses, time, and greenhouse gas emissions, on a regular and daily basis.
CARMA will enable the provision of advanced Green road-transport services to the end users. More precisely, CARMA will address the following popular use cases:
Through CARMA users will be able to get informed about the amount of fuel, money, time, or CO2 they spend on routes on which they travel. They will also be able to compare different alternative routing options for getting to their destination, e.g. choosing a motorway vs. an avenue, etc. Users will be able to see such comparative results directly on their mobile devices, as well as on the Web, thus getting proper feedback on their routing choices.
Cooperative Services for Mobile Virtual Communities
WIKIZEN’s vision is to research, develop, test and deploy a novel service-enabling ICT-based platform that will place mobile users at the heart of the service/product implementation, customization and delivery processes. The project intends to empower mobile users to form Virtual Mobile Communities (VMCs) with members that have common daily interests (such as food, cinema, clubbing, electronic devices, gadgets, etc.), and are willing to share social media, contextual and other data that they produce or collect, and to cooperate with one another in order to improve their everyday experience (e.g., detect and try interesting relevant services, products or good “deals”).
